History

Beginning of the Outbreak[]

Dale worked as a salesman for almost forty years. After retiring, he and his wife bought a camper and set out to travel through America, a travel that lasted for almost two years, until the zombie outbreak began. Traveling from Florida, they didn't even know what was going on, until Dale's wife was killed at a campsite eighty miles from Atlanta. Dale buried her, and then set out for Atlanta, planning to find his cousins there. However, he arrived late, and the city was already blocked as the army fought off the hordes of zombies inside. He ended up comping in the outskirts of Atlanta, where settled a camp with Andrea and Amy. Eventually, more survivors came to the camp.[1]

When Rick arrived on the camp, Dale attempted to warn him about Shane and Lori's relationship, something Rick dismissed.[2] Eventually, Dale's suspicions ended up being true, and Rick didn't even want to consider the possibility of Shane being the real father of Lori's unborn child.[3]

When the group lifted camp and decided to look for shelter somewhere else, everyone packed up inside Dale's R.V. and he helmed the wheel. After Amy's death,[1] Dale comforted the mourning Andrea, which in short time ended up in a romantic relationship.[3] Even though he still grieved for his recently deceased wife, he genuinely cared for her, and he reassured it to Andrea.

Life at the Prison[]

When the group arrived and holed up inside an abandoned prison, Dale had the responsibility to talk some reason into Rick, who was suffering with the pressures of leadership, along with his troubles with his family. When Rick proved to be over his head with the pressure, Dale and other survivors decided to create a committee to take the decisions of the group. At some point, the group suffered the loss of Allen, and Dale and Andrea took his twin sons, Ben and Billy, under their care.

Months passed, and they all managed to make a home out of the prison, and Lori's pregnancy reached its birth stage. Dale helped Billy keep the generator running, but for that they needed to siphon gas from the abandoned cars. Out in the darkness, Dale was caught off guard by a zombie that bit him in the leg. Dale was rushed to the infirmary, and his leg was amputated to prevent the infection from spreading. Dale survived, and in a matter of weeks he earned a prosthetic leg built by Andrea and Tyreese.

When the group engaged in a conflict against the Governor and his army, Dale and Andrea decided to escape from the prison, taking the twins, Maggie, Glenn, and Sophia to the safety of the Greene Family Farm.

Fear the Hunters[]

When the battle ended with catastrophic losses, the remaining survivors eventually gathered at the farm. Dale attempted to convince Andrea to make a life there, but she continued to question the wisdom of making a stationary camp and prevailed upon Dale to go on the road once more. Without the R.V. (previously destroyed during the battle with the Governor), the group joined Abraham and his group on their truck and traveled to Washington, D.C..

The journey took a horrific turn when Ben murdered his brother Billy. Immediately on the heels of this, Carl shot and killed Ben, and Dale never learned who was responsible for the execution. When their temporary home was overrun by several roamers, Dale was cut off from the group and bitten severely on the shoulder. He lied to the group about the bite, claiming that the walker only startled him and tore his shirt. That night, he snuck off into the woods, knowing he'd soon show the telltale signs of the undead. Only a few steps from camp, Dale was kidnapped by two strangers. When Dale regained consciousness, he learned that his abductors were cannibals who severed his left leg and were roasting it over an open fire. Dale offered them a surprise of his own, revealing his bite wound. His cries of "tainted meat" spooked the cannibals and they returned him to his fellow survivors. There in Father Gabriel's church, Dale succumbed to his wound and died, comforted by Andrea who dutifully shot him before he turned undead.
