History

Hel debuted in the Hellspawn series where she first fought spawn but lost and was destroyed but her spirit survived. Hel is a mysterious former Empress of Hell. At some point in the past, she was betayed by Spawn, lost her throne, and was in some way rescued by the Violator.

To repay her debt to the Violator, Hel agreed to aid the demon in his plan to gain control of the Jim Downing as Spawn. As part of his plan, Violator had hidden a portion of Malebolgia's power within the body of Sam Burke. As such, he instructed Hel to take the body of a human nurse and make sure Burke remained unconscious.

When Detective Roward discovered Hel perched atop Burke, she was forced to flee to the rooftop and commit suicide. Later in the morgue, the Violator awakened Hel and scolded her for her failure - but also promised to return with a new body for her.

A mere 15 minutes after Marc Rosen's girlfriend Susan Matthews committed suicide, Violator awakened Hel once again to inhabit Susan's corpse. Their plan required Hel to assume the life of Susan so that no one would know she had ever died. By doing this, Hel could remain close to Downing and slowly siphon his powers.

Hel remained by Marc for years, until ultimately she was killed by Al Simmons after he revealed to Marc who she really was.[1]
