Synopsis for 1st story
In 1939, Wells and his assistant examined Ethan Crane’s corpse after their experiment killed him and then sent it to the morgue. In the present, Maxine is disturbed by what she has learned and debates whether to continue with the story. At an Illinois prison, Supreme slaughters all the mutated and superhuman convicts held there, deeming them abominations. Afterward, he flies away and recalls his father, a traveling preacher during the Great Depression, as a feckless phony. In 1939, Wells’ assistant discovered Crane alive but comatose and regenerated in a new form. They then experimented on Crane repeatedly, killing him over and over, and each time he regenerated in a stronger form. Maxine falls asleep listening to a tape of her interview with the assistant, unaware that Supreme is listening outside her window. In Washington, D.C., Henry Stimple meets with a U.S. senator about a clone of Supreme his agency has created. They visit the facility in Iowa where the clone is kept. Stimple reveals the clone has all of Supreme’s memories up to the point a year earlier when they obtained the tissue samples from which the clone was grown. They awaken the clone, show him footage of Supreme’s recent killings, and send him to kill Supreme. Maxine awakens from a nightmare in which Supreme kills her to find he visited her apartment while she slept and rewrote her story on him.
