Synopsis for "Blood like Tar"
Mason sits on a park bench in Vancouver. He watches a man leave his home and enter his car for work. He puts out his cigarette and starts walking towards the building with his hoodie on. A car comes flying in his way and Becky, his wife, jumps out of the car furious at him for leaving their three year-old daughter, Kaitlyn at home alone. She berates him and accuses him of scoping out the place to rob.
Mason finds it hard to stay clean.
The next day, Becky rattles off several things for him to buy at the store. She nags him and creates a list for him. Mason heads to work where he works as a mover. It is pouring rain and his buddy, Dylan, asks him to take a smoke break. They talk about being clean and out of jail finally. Dylan tells him that Becky was good to him for sticking around while he was in jail.
On his way home from work, Mason attempts to steal the items Becky wanted him to get from a convenience store. When the clerk pursues him, he turns and punches the man out. In the process, the eggs and milk container break. He throws it in the trash as he walks home.
Upon arriving home, Mason pretends to have forgotten the supplies they needed. Becky is angry and heads to work and leaves Mason at home to watch over Kaitlyn. As she attempts to enter work, their old drug dealer, Joel, attempts to give Becky some drugs. Becky refuses but still ends up with a small sample baggie. That night, a fellow co-worker tells her that their paycheck has been cut in half. She looks at the bag of drugs and begins to wonder if she'll break down and try them once more.
Meanwhile, Mason receives a call from his buddy Dylan. Dylan asks for help as he may try drugs once more. Mason heads to the bar with Kaitlyn and has her wait in the car. He tries to rush Dylan out but ends up staying for one drink. When he exists, the police are waiting for him and arrest him. He looks at the car and see his daughter is missing.
