History
Origin[]
Thomas John McCall was unpopular in high school and didn't have much of a future.[2] In 1989,[3] at 16 years old, he drank an experimental serum[2] in his father's lab, which turned his body into a mass of granite-like organic rock. That same year, Thomas was recruited to join the high-profile government superteam Youngblood, where he assumed the identity of Bedrock.[4] Bedrock worked under the leadership of Shaft alongside teammates Chapel, Diehard, Vogue, Link and Combat.[3]
1992[]
On March 1992, Bedrock had lunch with his mother in their home at Baltimore. However, they were interrupted when he got a notification from Youngblood's headquarters. He traveled to Washington, where he and his team stopped supervillains Strongarm and Gage from breaking out the other half of their supervillain team, The Four, composed of Deadlock and Starbright.[1] The Four were captured and put in holding cells in the Pentagon.[5]
A week later,[6] Bedrock was briefed in The Pentagon alongside Shaft by Roland Thymer, their manager. When Thymer mentioned the amount of variant action figures they were making out of Youngblood, Shaft felt it was exploiting the customer, but Bedrock wanted to collect them all. That afternoon, Shaft and Bedrock threw a press conference where they denied the involvement of Youngblood's International Task Force in the death of Hassan Kussein. They were asked about Spawn, Shadowhawk and the Savage Dragon. Later, they were alerted to a jailbreak at the Pentagon. Shaft, Bedrock, and Chapel arrived to find The Four being freed by a villain named Showdown and a group of ninjas. The Four tried to teleport away, but Chapel was able to shoot Gage clear of teleport range. Afterwards, Diehard appeared with the news that there was an incident with the Away Team, and they needed to go to Germany to provide support immediately.[5] For this mission, Bedrock and the Home Team were joined by Photon.[7]
After flying for ten hours, Bedrock and the Home Team found the Away Team knocked out in a G.A.T.E. International laboratory where the they had been called to supervise the transport of a super-soldier named Jonathan Taylor Prophet. Prophet was the only remaining combatant against an army of robotic soldiers called Disciples of Doom, who were arriving through a portal from the planet D'khay. Sentinel, leader of the Youngblood Away Team, informed Shaft they needed to close the portal, so Shaft sent Bedrock and Diehard to do that. Crossing into planet D'Khay, they met its ruler, Darkthornn, who knocked out Diehard and brainwashed Bedrock to do his bidding just by looking at him. Darkthornn and Bedrock crossed back to Germany, where Darkthornn ordered Prophet was surrendered to him.[7] Shaft decided they needed to take out Bedrock first, since they knew what he was capable of. The Berzerkers, a group of freedom fighters from D'Khay, were also present, and Wildmane, one of its members, distracted Bedrock under Shaft's orders while fellow Berzerker Grey and Youngblood Away Team member Brahma got into position and hit Bedrock hard enough to break his hypnosis. By the time Bedrock woke up, with no memories after entering D'Khay's portal, Darkthornn had been made to retreat back to his home planet by Youngblood Away Team member Psi-Fire.[8]
On August 9, Bedrock and his team guarded vice-president Dan Quayle at Strategic Defense Initiative Astronomics along with two mercenaries named Pike and Hestia. There, the VP was assaulted by a rogue Covert Action Team.[9] Bedrock and Diehard tackled the terrorist named Maul, but when he kept growing in size to the point of almost bringing the building down on everybody, one of his teammates, Voodoo, put him to sleep psychically. Seeing she had saved them, Combat was willing to entertain the possibility that there was more going on there than met the eye. When the Vice-President tried to execute Voodoo, Shaft told him to let them handle the terrorists, but the Vice President, outraged at being touched and questioned, shot at Shaft and grazed his skull. With Youngblood turning against him, Voodoo extracted an alien named B'lial from inside the Vice President, exposing the being who had been controlling his actions.[10] Shortly after, Bedrock, Combat, and Chapel received an energy blast from the alien in charge, named Lord Helspont. As the Wild C.A.T. left to take care of him, Youngblood directed its attention to his cronies, Pike and Hestia. Shortly after, the facility started self destructing, and Youngblood was forced to run with the Vice-President, praying the C.A.T. could make it out on their own. After the explosion, there was no sign of any of the involved parties, except for the C.A.T.'s cyborg, who sacrificed himself to stop Helspont. Shaft commented the C.A.T. seemed like a resourceful bunch, and that he wouldn't be surprised if their paths crossed again.[11]
In December, Bedrock flew to Chicago, where he started a fight with Police Officer Dragon to see if he was strong enough to join Youngblood. Dragon considered it the stupidest thing he'd ever heard, and, for causing thousands in property damages, he arrested Bedrock.[12][13] Bedrock was outraged, and considered breaking out, but decided against it.[14] Bedrock was later bailed out by Shaft and Diehard.[12][14]
Later, Bedrock was called to stop a being who was approaching Earth's atmosphere alongside Diehard, Sentinel, Combat, and Photon. The being identified himself as Supreme, but Combat couldn't believe he was the legend who had helped his people, so he attacked him. Supreme engaged in battle against Youngblood, ending with a collision with Diehard equal to a 500 megaton explosion. After that, Sentinel admitted they had acted hastily and requested Supreme to allow them to escort him to a conference on Earth. There, scientists ran tests and determined he was the real Supreme. Sentinel offered him a contract to join Youngblood, but Supreme was disgusted at the government's genetic engineering of superhumans and flew away from the building, something Sentinel took as a "no."[15]
Later events[]
Badrock once visited Hell, confronting Spawn's old enemy the Violator. This was after being named temporary security head of a scientific installation that was investigating the realm of hell. He was more responsible at this point, trying to protect the many innocent people who had unwittingly made the trip to Hell with him. He had to deal with the interference of heavenly and hellish agents and the unwillingness of some of the humans to actually obey his orders.[16]
In the year 3000, Badrock was still alive and returned for a brief period of time to get some help from Youngblood to stop the Katellans. The continued presence of the Katellans to get Combat back led to the destruction of Earth, Katella and Acura in Badrock's timeline. Badrock had therefore returned to 1995 to prevent this from happening.[17]Attributes
