Synopsis for 1st story
In Japan, Warblade is sparring with one of his kendo teacher’s students when he spots Pillar, a former friend he is hunting. In a desert of the American Southwest, Ripclaw is mourning the loss of his child with Misery when he catches the son an elder fleeing tribal land. Suddenly, a jaguar appears and attacks, but Ripclaw fends it off. Meanwhile, Warblade follows Pillar to a meeting of the Faction, a splinter group of Daemonites, and watches them demonstrate a new type of body armor. Just as he prepares to attack, Pillar kills one of the Daemonites. Ripclaw learns the young men of his tribe have been disappearing after taking jobs with outsiders. To investigate, he joins a group of them waiting to be picked up. Armed men arrive in a truck, tranquilize them, and take them away. In Japan, Warblade ambushes Pillar, recalling how the two of them and Ripclaw used to work together for Cyberdata. On one mission, Pillar was presumed killed when a Daemonite possessed his body and fled. Pillar insists he is himself again and claims he has infiltrated the Faction to stop them from completing a doomsday weapon called the Trident. Warblade agrees to help him, and they take a jet to the next Faction meeting in the U.S. Warblade pretends to be possessed by a Daemonite, but a Faction member demands proof, ordering him to kill Ripclaw who emerges from the back of a truck.
